Laminate Flooring or Vinyl Plank Flooring in the Kitchen

Laminate Flooring or Vinyl Plank Flooring in the Kitchen

When considering flooring material for the kitchen, one must make sure that the floor can stand up to abuse. The kitchen is one of the areas in the house that have high traffic, and the floor is always subjected to heat, spills, and moisture. For this reason, a lot of homeowners are steering clear of using the more expensive wood flooring, such as engineered hardwood flooring. More often than not, homeowners would rather stick to the more affordable options that they have, such as laminate flooring and vinyl plank flooring for their kitchens.

Choosing between wood laminate flooring and vinyl wood plank flooring is, most of the time, a matter of taste and utility, as eachflooring type offers its own set of advantages and disadvantages. If you are out to shop for flooringsoon and considering buying any of the two, here are some notes that may help you make up your mind.

Appearance

Deciding between these type of floorings according to how they look is mostly a matter of personal preference. Some choose vinyl over laminate because of texture, while some choose laminate because it looks more like wood.

Resistance to Stains

Both vinyl plank flooring and laminate flooring are resistant to stains and are easy to clean. Laminates are a bit more less likely to let the stain to sit because of the protective layer they have over the photographic image. However, not all stain-removing chemicals can be used to clean a laminate, compared to vinyl which allows most cleaning detergents available to the market.

Durability and Longevity

Vinyl and laminate flooring cannot be sanded or refinished when scratched or dented, which is the advantage hardwood flooring have over these flooring materials. However, they are still relatively durable materials that can withstand scratching and similar cosmetic damages. When choosing between these two materials, some homeowners pick laminates because they have a protective covering called wear layer that makes this type more impervious to scratches.

However, some makes of laminates are cannot withstand excessive spills and water damage, which vinyl can tolerate. Moisture can make laminates warp or cause unwanted stains to laminates. Nevertheless, regarding longevity, laminates can outlast vinyl planks, provided they do not get wet that often. Sealing expansion gaps in a wet area such as the kitchen, or buying laminate floors that have water resistant cores or waxed edges may improve the life of the laminate floor you are planning to install in the kitchen.

Installing Laminate Flooring in Wet Areas

Installing Laminate Flooring in Wet Areas

Laminate flooring is fast becoming the best option when choosing flooring for any room because of its low cost and versatility. While this type of flooring is normally used in the non-“wet” areas such as living rooms and bedrooms, laminate floors can be installed in the kitchen, laundry area, or even the bathroom, provided that you follow certain installation guidelines. Remember that laminate floors have excellent water resistance compared to wood flooring. If you are trying to achieve the look of wooden floors, but would not risk ruining a costly engineered hardwood flooring, you may opt buying wood laminate flooringinstead. However, you must prevent water from getting underneath the floor.

Here are some things that you should keep in mind when installing laminate floors in the “wet” areas of your home.

Do Not Use Water-Based Glues

When using glues, it is always recommended to use urethane-based adhesives that have less moisture. Remember that moisture is not good for laminate flooring, so avoid any adhesives that may introduce water to the flooring. At any cost, avoid any floor glue that has water unless it is recommended by the manufacturer.

Check if the Subfloor is Level

Remember that it is a must to check if the subfloor of level when you attach a flooring, whether that is wood, laminate, or vinyl plank flooring. The subfloor is the preexisting floor where you attach the flooring. To check if the subfloor is level, place a straight piece of wood (2×4 would do) across the floor diagonally. Put a level on top of it. If the floor is not level, you will need to fill in the low spots with leveling compounds that you can buy in most hardware stores.

Seal Expansion Gaps

When installing laminate flooring in wet areas such as the bathroom or laundry area, it is imperative to use silicone seals on the expansion gaps, or you would lose the manufacturer’s warranty for the floor. Better yet, buy laminates that have waxed edges and water resistant cores to prevent the possibility of water damage to the material.

Installing Laminate Floor in the Kitchen

If you choose to install this type of flooring in the space where your refrigerator is, use a sealant to seal water supply lines going to the icemaker and glue locking system in front of the water dispenser as well to avoid leaks.

For areas near the sink or the dishwasher, seal the expansion gap in front of the cabinets with a silicone that is mildew-resistant and glue the locking system in front of the sink and the dishwasher.

Berber Carpeting: The Virtues of Using Them

But this type of cloth spinning is best known for its use in carpet making. What are the virtues of Berber carpeting that make them a great choice for those searching for carpets?

Of course, before talking about the virtues of these carpets, it’s interesting to note first the different properties this type of knitting has. Traditionally, natural fibers such as wool are being used to construct these carpets. With the emergence of modern technology, different types of fibers, including synthetic ones such as nylon and olefin, are now being used to construct these carpets. But even with the emergence of modern techniques, how these carpets are made is still fundamentally similar. Its construction uses a loop pile style, a type of construction technique that gives most of the strong points of this carpet.

With the means on how Berber carpeting is constructed already mentioned, this article can now proceed in mentioning the different virtues associated with using these carpets.

The Pros and Cons of Hand scraped Hardwood Flooring

Many would tell you that hand scrapedhardwood flooring is definitely the top choice if you want a rustic but sophisticated look for your home. Rustic because of the fact that it looks natural with the imperfections it has on the surface. Waves, shallow grooves and even minute holes add to the beauty of this particular type of wood flooring. Another benefit would be the fact that it could easily camouflage any scratches, scuff marks and even dents that your flooring might get due to foot traffic. For fixing these minor problems, all you really need is a bit of stain and finish which should come with repair kits readily available everywhere. It only takes an hour or so to fix these problems and you need not spend a whole lot as well. Isn’t that fantastic? After all, who can afford to replace their flooringeach time it get damaged?

Handscraped hardwood flooringis fast becoming one of the most popular options for people who want to create a more rustic atmosphere in a room. With the texture and aged look that this particular type of flooring has, it’s easy to see why it’s the top choice for that purpose. As the name suggests, the design or “texture” that it is well known for comes is done through hand scraping or by machinery. Now, one look at it and you might wonder just how easy it is to clean, given the fact that it does have a number of waves and even shallow grooves which easily catches dirt. Well, you’d be glad to know that they are pretty low maintenance so all you really need are retail cleaners meant for hardwood or opt to use homemade solutions which would work just as effectively. Through the use of a few household products, you should be able to successfully clean as well as disinfect your wood flooring. Here’s a quick overview of what you need and what you have to do.

Handscraped hardwoord floors are meant to look aged and worn. Much like reclaimed wood, it lends a more rustic and natural appeal to any space that it is used in. The textures that cover the wood itself is often done by hand through the use of metal scrapes, hammering as well as chiseling to create shallow grooves which give it the surface it is well-known for. One of the biggest advantages that come with using this type of flooring would be the fact that it can easily hide any scuff marks as well as other damages that it might get during the course of its use. However, with that said, it doesn’t mean that it would not require maintenance. In order for it to still look aesthetically pleasing, a bit of cleaning and restoration is in order. After all, given some time, it will eventually lose its luster. So, how do you make these kinds of flooring shine again? Check out the list below for a few ideas.

With all the good comes certain downsides as well. One of which would be the fact that refinishing this type of wood floor isn’t exactly easy to do. This can become an issue if you wish to change the current color, if you want to fix the existing finish which has begun to lift (this can happen every now and then), if your floor gets water damaged as well as warped. Refinishing would require that your entire floor be sanded down and hand scraped once more. Quite a lot of work, right? It can also cost you quite a bit of money especially since it needs to be hand scraped a second time.

Another common issue that some people have would be cleaning. The thing is that this floor has a tendency to collect dirt and dust within its grooves. The cleaner that you use can also get stuck in these grooves thus forming a build up which can be difficult to remove. However, don’t let that discourage you from choosing this type of hardwood flooring since there are certain easy to do solutions for that issue. There are cleaners specifically made for this type of floor which doesn’t form any build up. Alternatively, you can also go with a homemade solution of water and vinegar which is also good for disinfecting the wood itself.

So there you have it, a few basic things when it comes to hand scraped flooring and how you can maintain it without much hassle.
